When Erica Schultz of Saginaw Township marries Mark James, Saturday, October 18, in Bay City, her best friend will stand with them as Matron of Honor.
Angelene Schultz, also known as Busha or Granny-Mae to the couple, is the bride's 92-year-old grandmother. "She is my best friend," said Erica Schultz, 26 who owns a web design business with James. "When my grandpa died, she bought a house down the street from our family. We both needed someone. I still go over to her house every day, to get her mail and prescriptions."
Schultz ran down the street to Grandma's house during high school, to share her "teen drama" and have her girlfriends sleep over, she said. She even lived there for a year during college. When Schultz met James in 2001, they stopped by Grandma's house on the night of their first date.
"The way that Mark was with Grandma, I knew he would be a keeper," she said. The three have taken road trips together and look forward to new adventures. The couple lives one street over from "Busha" and visit every day. "We couldn't think of anyone else we'd want standing next to us," the bride-to-be said.
Angelene Schultz has never heard of another 92-year-old Matron of Honor, but she is ready for the task, she said. She helped choose the wedding gown and will wear her own red dress to the ceremony at St. James Catholic Church.
"I feel it is a big honor for me to be in the wedding party, and I'm happy to do it, even if I do raise some eyebrows."
She has five children, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
